Two dead after motorcycles collide near protest in Caracas

Caracas, Jun 14 (efe-epa).- The Minister of Interior and Justice of Venezuela reported on Wednesday that two people died and another was injured after two motorcycles collided near a protest in eastern Caracas, and accused the anti-government leaders of causing these deaths.

"Those that were summoned by Freddy Guevara and leaders of the right-wing terrorist caused the death of two people in eastern Caracas," Interior and Justice Minister Nestor Reverol wrote on his Twitter account.

He added that the two "were on motorcycles, one of them was heading against the flow of traffic because of roadblocks and demonstrators."

According to the minister, the victims - identified as Luis Machado, 27, and Jose Lorenzo, 50 - collided "head-on on the Prados del Este highway as they were escaping from the violent groups in the area."

Reverol said that Lorenzo died of "polytrauma," while Machado "died while he was transferred to a hospital."

During the incident, Oriana Quintero, 22, was also found injured "with multiple head injuries," and currently remains under medical supervision.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has not yet confirmed the death of these two people nor has it provided any details of the incident.

Previously, the head of the National Directorate for Civil Protection and Disaster Management, Jorge Galindo, reported that one person died and another was injured near this demonstration due to the collision of two motorcycles.

Since Apr. 1, Venezuela has witnessed a wave of both anti- and pro-government protests, some of which have become violent and which have caused at least 71 deaths, including the two recent victims, and more than a thousand of people were injured.
