Baghdad, Oct 11 (efe-epa).- An Iraqi court on Wednesday issued arrest warrants for members of the electoral commission for the Kurdish independence referendum that processed the controversial separatist poll on Sept. 25.

An overwhelming majority of Kurds in the semi-autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region voted to secede from Iraq, but the polling was dismissed as unconstitutional by the central government in the capital, Baghdad, from where Iraq's judiciary issued the latest warrants.

"Al-Rusafa's court of inquiry issued an arrest warrant against the president and members of the commission that supervised the referendum," the spokesman for the Higher Judicial Council Abdel Satar Birkadar said in a statement.

Birkadir pointed out that the order was issued based on a complaint filed by the National Security Council in light of the referendum.

The court issued the warrant in line with Article No. 329 of penal code, Birkadir added.

The decision comes one day after Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi confirmed that the government would not negotiate the referendum, which he demanded be suspended.
