Belarus, Kazakhstan launch new phase in bilateral relations

Minsk, Nov 29 (efe-epa).- The president of Belarus said after a meeting with his Kazakh counterpart Wednesday in this capital that the two nations had embarked on a new phase in their bilateral relationship.

Aleksandr Lukashenko and Nursultan Nazarbayev agreed during their talks in Minsk to promote cooperation in the technology area.

"I'm pleased to announce that this visit has opened a new stage in our bilateral cooperation," Lukashenko said afterward, Belarusian state-owned news agency Belta reported.

"The reciprocal entry of capital with a focus on innovation and hi-tech will be the distinctive feature of this cooperation. The (world of) tomorrow belongs to cutting-edge technologies," the Belarusian leader added.

Belarus and Kazakhstan "are ready to work for the future," said Lukashenko, who noted that his country "already is developing a significant volume of software for many countries and is ready to work jointly and share best practices ... (with) its Kazakh brothers."

"I repeat: we won't withhold anything from you. You'll be fully informed about everything we can do in this respect," he said.

Lukashenko pointed to interest in various "promising" projects in areas such as the petrochemical industry, agriculture, energy engineering, transportation, logistics and new technologies.

Earlier, both presidents had expressed their willingness to further strengthen bilateral economic ties.

"We've finally begun to overcome the rough patch in our economic-trade relations," Belta cited Lukashenko as saying at the start of his meeting Friday with Nazarbayev, who had arrived in Minsk earlier in the day for a two-day official visit.

Nazarbayev, for his part, said bilateral relations were currently at a "high strategic level," adding that there were no obstacles to their further development.

Since establishing diplomatic relations 25 years ago, the two countries have laid a "solid economic and political foundation for friendship and cooperation," the Kazakh president said.

Nazarbayev said Lukashenko's leadership had been instrumental in transforming Belarus into a developed European country.

"It's also thanks to his tenacity that 260 Belarusian companies currently operate in Kazakhstan and there are Belarusian farm products in our stores," Nazarbayev said of his host.

For his part, Lukashenko said that Belarus and Kazakhstan were entirely on the same page in the political and diplomatic spheres.
