Brussels, Nov 30 (efe-epa).- The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly Thursday in favor of a resolution calling for an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia to halt the escalation of the war in Yemen.

The resolution - approved by vote of 539-13 with 81 abstentions - cites the finding of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization that 20.7 million people in Yemen are in need of food and other humanitarian aid.

"There is a need for immediate and full humanitarian access to the conflict-affected areas," the text says, describing the current situation in Yemen as "catastrophic."

The resolution asks the European Union's top foreign affairs official, Federica Mogherini, to propose a comprehensive European strategy for peace in Yemen.

Members also urged the Saudi-led coalition to lift their land, sea and air blockade of Yemen and implored all actors to act to de-escalate the conflict and allow the entry of humanitarian aid.

The text likewise called on Iran "to immediately cease providing support to Houthi forces in Yemen" and said that EU member-states should stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia in accord with the Council Common Position on arms export controls adopted in 2008.
