Northern Spain on alert as Ebro river expected to burst its banks

Madrid, Apr 13 (efe-epa).- Heavy rains in the north of Spain have made the Ebro river overflow, forcing emergency services to be deployed on Friday as several regions were placed on flooding alert.

Images by an EFE photographer showed rural areas just outside the city of Tudela, in the Navarra region, completely underwater and important highways cut as the river burst its banks.

Police officers and the military emergency unit (UME) have been deployed to towns along the Ebro in the region of Aragon, where mayors have been urging residents to remain careful and vigilant.

Meanwhile, local government authorities in the Zaragoza province said search teams had found the body of a shepherd who had gone missing on Thursday while crossing the river Grios with his flock.
