At least 57 killed in attack on voter registration center in Afghanistan

Kabul, Apr 22 (efe-epa).- At least 57 people were killed and 119 injured Sunday in a suicide attack on a voter registration center in western Kabul, government sources said.

Public health ministry spokesperson Wahidullah Majroh said the rescue operation at the site of the attack was complete and the toll not expected to rise further.

He did not detail how many people were in critical condition, but said it was hoped the death toll was final.

The attack took place at around 10 am in the Qala-e-Nazir area of the capital as people queued to register themselves at the center.

The voter registration center is situated in a district with a large population of the Shia minority community Hazara, often targeted by the Islamic State terror group.

Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid denied responsibility for the attack on Twitter.

The IS said in a statement released on Telegram it was behind the attack, but the authenticity of the claim was yet to be verified.

Another attack on Sunday took the lives of three women, two children and a man in the north of the country, when an explosive device blew up on the road they were traveling on near a voter registration center, according to the public health ministry.

President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attacks on Twitter, saying: "I wish Allah's mercy upon those who martyred, speedy recovery to the wounded, and convey my deep condolences to victims' families."

The process of registering voters for parliamentary elections in Afghanistan began last week in Kabul, and is set to continue in the coming weeks.

The Afghan capital has witnessed multiple attacks this year, the deadliest was in late January when the Taliban detonated a bomb inside an ambulance in the central district of Kabul, killing more than 100 people.

Since then, Kabul authorities have reviewed the security plan of the city and taken measures to prevent large-scale attacks.

Ghani had also proposed a dialogue with the Taliban in February to find a peaceful solution to the long-running conflict.
