Palestinian man killed by Israeli gunfire in West Bank

Ramallah, West Bank, Jun 6 (efe-epa).- A 21-year-old Palestinian man was shot dead on Wednesday by an Israeli soldier in the town of Nabi Salih in northern Ramallah, the Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed.

According to the Twitter account of the Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson, the man was one of a group of "more than 10" Palestinians who threw rocks at Israeli soldiers during an arrest operation, whereupon a soldier who had been struck by a rock opened fire, mortally wounding the man.

"The soldier, who was hit by the rock, fired towards the suspect, who was injured and given medical treatment at the scene. Despite this, the suspect died," the spokesperson said.

"No IDF troops were injured. The incident is being examined," the statement added.

The Palestinian news agency Maan identified the deceased as Izz Abd al-Hafith Tamimi.

According to Maan, the army prevented locals from providing any medical treatment to the young man.

The West Bank village of Nabi Salih is known for demonstrations organized against the Israeli occupation and more recently for being the place where Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi was arrested and convicted of assaulting Israeli soldiers.

The man killed on Wednesday and Tamimi belong to the same family clan.
