Trump and Kim's Singapore summit begins with a handshake

Singapore, Jun 12 (efe-epa).- The President of the United States and the North Korean leader on Tuesday shook hands and spoke to the media at the beginning of the historic summit between the sitting leaders of the two countries, held at the Capella Hotel on Singapore's Sentosa Island.

Donald Trump entered a courtyard of the British colonial-style hotel from the right side and Kim from the left, before shaking hands in front of about a dozen US and North Korean flags that flanked the red carpet.

The US president spoke a few words to the North Korean leader and touched his right arm slightly, while Kim replied to him: "Nice to meet you, Mr. President."

The two posed in front of the cameras with serious faces and did not smile until just before entering the room where they had their first meeting.

Sitting on Kim's left, the US President said prior to a 45-minute meeting behind closed doors that he is confident that the talks will be "a tremendous success."

"We will have a tremendous relationship. I have no doubt," Trump added.

Kim Jong-un, for his part, said that his country and the US have overcome many "obstacles" between them in order to make the summit possible.

"It has not been easy to get here. The old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles, but we have overcome them and we are here today," Kim said.

After the private talks, Trump and Kim will continue with a meeting with their respective delegations and a working lunch.
