11 Civil servants killed in education department attack in Afghanistan

Kabul, Jul 11 (efe-epa).- The Afghan security forces Wednesday shot down two militants who barricaded themselves for two hours in the office of the education department in Jalalabad, an attack that also left 11 office staff dead and 10 others injured.

"In this attack, 11 people were martyred, all of them are employees of Jalalabad city's Education Office," spokesperson for Nangarhar province of which Jalalabad is the capital, Attaullah Khogyani told EFE.

He also confirmed the deaths of the two attackers, who were shot down by security forces.

The dead include the head of the Department of Education, Sayed Sulaiman Pacha and among the injured are five staff members, three security force members, a student and a worker passing through the area.

During the attack, which began around 9.30 am and lasted for two hours, around 30 employees were in the building, of whom some 20 were rescued by security forces.

In June, four rebels were killed and 10 civilians were wounded in an attack on the provincial headquarters of the education ministry in Jalalabad, although the building attacked on Wednesday belongs to the city's education office.

Until now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack in Nangarhar, a hotbed for insurgent groups, including the Taliban and the Islamic State.

This is the third major attack in the city this month, and comes a day after at least 11 people were killed and four others were wounded in a suicide attack on a security check-post.

On Jul. 1, 19 people - mostly from the minority Hindu and Sikh communities - were killed and 21 wounded in another suicide attack in Jalalabad, which coincided with a visit by President Ashraf Ghani.
