Thousands of police in Cambodia hold mobilization event ahead of polls

Phnom Penh, Jul 25 (efe-epa).- Thousands of police officers joined a mobilization event Wednesday in the Cambodian capital, just a few days before the country holds its general elections.

More than 4,100 officers, many of them armed with automatic rifles and wearing riot gear, took part in the exercise and stood in long rows, an efe-epa journalist reports.

Municipal Police Chief Chuon Sovann and Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng also attended the rally.

The governor, speaking to the assembled officers, urged them to maintain security for people heading to the polls on Sunday and said any unrest must be prevented.

Cambodia will hold its sixth national elections and current Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has been in power for 33 years, is expected to win, after his Cambodian People's Party's main contender the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) was disbanded under a Supreme Court order in November, 2017.

That party's leader Kem Sokha was also imprisoned on charges of treason.

Some CNRP leaders in exile have launched a campaign, asking Cambodians to boycott the elections, which the party sees as a sham.
