Spain firefighters battle to stop mountain flames from spreading to village

Huelva, Spain, Aug 3 (efe-epa).- Firefighters in the southwest of Spain were on Friday battling the flames of a wildfire that was burning through a mountain range and was threatening to approach a nearby village.

An Andalusia regional representative, José Fiscal, told press that since early in the morning, emergency services had been handling the wildfire in the Sierra de San Cristóbal with special tactics in the two areas that were closest to towns.

"We are mainly working more to the north to stop the fire from spreading to the town of Campofrío, which isn't very likely but that's the task at the moment," he said.

José Antonio Martínez, a director at Andalusia's forest fire response team Infoca, said there shouldn't be any problems unless there are meteorological changes, though none had been predicted.

Meanwhile, the more difficult flames to the south, near the town of Nerva, were approaching a clean mining area and therefore no problems or evacuations were expected.

Battling the wildfire are 150 firefighters, 41 troops and 21 aircraft, including 10 helicopters and several airplanes.

Much of the Iberian Peninsula was gripped by a heatwave as a plume of extremely hot air moving up from Africa pushed temperatures as high as 45C (113F) in places, which according to the Civil Protection service increased the likeliness of wildfires.
