Malaysian judge postpones trial against 2 Chileans accused of murder

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 27 (efe-epa).- A judge in Kuala Lumpur on Monday postponed to the end of next month the trial of two Chileans accused of murder in Malaysia, a crime that is punishable by death by hanging.

Felipe Osiadacz, a 27-year-old engineer, and the Fernando Candia, a 30-year-old chef, who pleaded not guilty, were arrested a year ago in Bangkok for allegedly killing a man while on vacation in Malaysia.

The public prosecutor's office was due to present its arguments but asked for a deferral, saying it had to give priority to other cases.

The judge agreed to the appeal, advising that the case would be adjourned until Sept. 24.

The judge gave the prosecution until Oct. 9 to conclude its arguments, and will decide a week later whether to accept the charges and proceed with the trial.

According to the accused, the Malaysian man pursued them to their hostel asking for money.

The man died after an ensuing scuffle, but the Chileans say they were acting in self-defense.

According to the forensic report, the person was under the influence of several drugs.

In Malaysia, conviction for drug trafficking and voluntary homicide results in death by hanging.
