Bomb attack on Iran police headquarters kills at least 2 people

Tehran, Dec 6 (efe-epa).- At least two people were killed in a bombing at a police headquarters in the southeastern Iranian city of Chabahar on Thursday, local authorities confirmed.

Following the attack, gunfire was heard in Chabahar – located in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan, near the border with Pakistan – where militant Sunni groups opposed to the ruling Shiite government, smugglers and drug traffickers operate.

Cited by the Iranian state-run IRNA news agency, Chabahar governor Rahmdel Bamri said that the suicide bomber was killed after he blew himself up in the attack, which left 28 others injured.

Bamri added that police have launched an investigation into the explosion, for which no group has claimed responsibility as of yet.

Terror attacks are frequent near Iran's borders with Pakistan (east) and Iraq (west).

In September, 24 people were killed and 60 wounded during a military parade in the western city of Ahvaz in September.

In June 2017, a double attack on the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum in Tehran of the Islamic republic's founder and former supreme leader, Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, left 17 dead and over 50 injured.

Both attacks were claimed by the Islamic State terror organization, whose strongholds in Syria were bombarded days later by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
