UK ex-politician, technology expert killed in plane crash in northern Spain

San Sebastian, Jan 11 (efe-epa).- One of two men who died when the small aircraft they were traveling in crashed into a mountain ridge in northern Spain was a well-known photographer, pilot and former politician from the United Kingdom, his agency revealed on Friday.

Simon Moores, who was killed when the Piper aircraft he and another occupant were flying in hit a steep ridge on Wednesday, was an aerial photographer, technology expert, well-known speaker and former councilor for the Conservative Party in theThanet District Council, his agency said.

"Sad to hear the shocking news about our friend and colleague Simon Moores who has died in an air crash in Spain," the Gordon Poole media agency said on its official Twitter account. "Simon was a remarkable tech expert and speaker, and a pleasure to work with. He will be sadly missed," the agency added.

The emergency specialist for the Basque regional government, Iñaki López Etxezarreta confirmed on Thursday that the accident had taken place at around 13.10 pm Wednesday when the aircraft crashed into a slope just short of the summit of Mount Hernio, which stands 1,075 meters (3,526) tall.

Moores' remains were found near the site of the collision on a rocky surface with a 50-degree slope.

The Ertzaintza — the Basque police force — and forensic police were still working on the process of formally identifying the bodies and have requested the assistance of UK police in order to confirm DNA samples, the Basque Department for Security explained.

UK and Spanish authorities have yet to formally confirm the identities of the two occupants.

The plane departed Wednesday morning from Cascais airport in Portugal — 27 kilometers (16.7 miles) west of Lisbon — as confirmed by both Moores on his Twitter account and Spain's main air navigation manager AENA.

On Sunday Moores shared on Twitter his plan to travel back to the UK from Lisbon with one fuel stop at Biarritz, on Frances southwestern coast.

However, on Tuesday he tweeted there had been a change to their plans:

"Dawn’s early light - Apparently Biarritz make it very difficult to refuel so go to San Sebastián instead," Moores said.

The men headed towards Hondarribia in the Basque region where the accident occurred in the small locality of Errezil, some 40 kilometers from the northern seaside resort of San Sebastián.

Moores last tweet was two pictures of the "Mountains of mid Spain."
