Juncker urges Romania not to bring internal issues EU Council presidency

Bucharest, Jan 11 (efe-epa).- Romania should ensure it does not bring its internal political problems to the European Union when it takes on the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, the European Commission's chief said Friday.

Jean-Claude Juncker spoke alongside Romania's prime minister, Viorica Dancila, in Bucharest as the southeastern EU member assumed its six-month tenure of the Council of EU, which represents bloc's national governments.

"If you take on the presidency, you must put brackets around internal political problems," Juncker told the Bucharest conference, adding he had urged the incoming head of the Council not to export its domestic issues to EU.

He reiterated his view that Romania must prepare to deal with several challenges in the coming months, namely Brexit, the next EU budget and the European Parliament elections in May.

Dancila said Romania was fully aware of the challenges ahead.

"We are dedicated to working toward positive results and to ensure European unity as a way to tackle the challenges," she said.

Romania has recently raised eyebrows at home and abroad with a set of controversial judicial reforms that critics say would effectively grant immunity to those accused of corruption.
