French president demands action on climate change during Kenya visit

Nairobi, Mar 14 (efe-epa).- The French president called for a global pact to tackle climate change during his visit to Kenya on Thursday.

Emmanuel Macron urged world leaders to take action to combat global warming during the Fourth UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), which meets this week in Nairobi.

“Today one thing is clear, we can no longer rely on statements, we can no longer rely on calls for urgency, we can no longer rely on words, this has been clear for a long time,” he added.

Macron said not enough was being done to protect nature and called on governments and businesses to do more.

He said that an international, legally-binding pact with a “serious commitment” was needed to combat the problem.

“We cannot say that our generation did not know the consequences of the destruction of nature, biodiversity and ecosystems,” he added.

France will host this year's G7 summit, a group of the seven most advanced economies in the world, which will determine how to finance the fight against climate change, "with concrete and effective actions," Macron said.

He said that a “great mobilization” has taken place in response to the 2015 Paris Agreement but that there has not been enough action.

The 2015 Paris Agreement was a global action plan signed by 174 countries and the EU to put the world on track to avoid dangerous climate change by limiting global warming to below 2 degrees and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees.

The UNEA is the world’s highest-level decision-making body on environmental issues.

It meets biennially to set priorities for global environmental policies and develop international environmental law and brings together governments, entrepreneurs and activists.

The conference aims to address the critical environmental challenges facing the world today, according to its website.

Siim Kiisler, Minister of Environment of Estonia and President of the fourth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly, said in a statement: “Understanding these challenges and preserving and rehabilitating our environment is at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

He added: “Through its resolutions and calls to action, the Assembly provides leadership and catalyzes intergovernmental action on the environment.”

The fourth UNEA is hosted in Nairobi, Kenya, and is taking place between Mar. 11 to 15, 2019.
