Ivanka Trump meets in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian President

Addis Ababa, Abr 15 (efe-epa).- Ivanka Trump, daughter and adviser of the United States president Donald Trump, met with Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde in Addis Ababa on Tuesday.

She praised the efforts of the African nation to improve the inclusion of women, paying tribute to Zewde’s achievement in becoming the first woman to assume the Presidency in Ethiopia and the only female in this position across the continent.

The US adviser also commended the effort of the Ethiopian president to improve women’s opportunities and participation in the global economy.

They discussed the need to improve access to finances for women to start a business and the need to focus efforts in rural areas.

President Zwede said that the initiative of her US counterpart to empower women worldwide was positive.

The meeting was held at the Presidential Palace in Addis Ababa, after Trump's visit to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in the Ethiopian capital to commemorate the victims of an Ethiopian Airlines plane accident on Mar. 10 that left 157 dead.

“I visited Holy Trinity Church in Addis Ababa to pay our respects and honor the memory of the lives lost in the tragic Ethiopian Airlines crash. My heartfelt sympathies to all the victims’ families and loved ones,” she tweeted after the visit.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also held a meeting with Trump, for which he had to interrupt an executive meeting of his party.

The US president’s daughter announced Tuesday the launch of “2X Africa”, a program sponsored by her father’s Women's Global Development and Prosperity initiative, which she presented in February and which will invest $350 million to help projects led by women based in sub-Saharan Africa.

President Trump’s initiative aims to help more than 50 million women in developing countries improve their economic prospects by 2025.

The program will promote new projects, offer training, facilitate financial support and promote reforms to break down gender inequality faced by women.

It will be financed by public and private funds, with an initial fund of around $50 million allocated by USAID, which came under fire when some interpreted the budget as being the equivalent of just $1 per woman the plan hopes to help.

Ivanka Trump’s visit to Ethiopia was part of her African tour scheduled from Monday to Wednesday, which also included the Ivory Coast. EFE
