13 Malian soldiers killed in attack on military barracks

Bamako, Apr 21 (efe-epa).- A total of 13 Malian soldiers were killed in an attack against on army barracks on the border between Mali and Mauritania, security forces told Efe.

The onslaught took place in the southwestern town of Guire, north of the capital Bamako, at around 5 am local time and was carried out by a group of heavily armed attackers who then fled the scene.

The raiders injured a number of people and stole military vehicles, weapons and ammunition before fleeing.

Eyewitnesses said the quarters have been “totally destroyed.”

From the nearby military base of Nara, the Malian army sent support to a manhunt operation, although the attackers are most likely to have crossed the border to Mauritania.

The Malian army has been the target of several attacks by different extremist Malian groups, including Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (Group to Support Islam and Muslims), affiliated to Al Qaeda. EFE
