Juan Manuel Santos calls for support for Global Goals

Nur-Sultan, May 17 (efe-epa).- Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos called here Friday for support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the 17 global objectives to eradicate poverty and protect the planet that the leaders of 193 countries signed in 2015 at the New York summit.

"Today it is extremely important that all the countries of the world cooperate in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. And it is important that it is the politicians who take the lead in this task," Santos said in his speech at the 12th Astana Economic Forum in the Kazakh capital.

The Colombian president said that the efforts should be spearheaded by the respective national leaders, who should in return ensure that officials and institutions meet the tasks set.

"In Colombia, we created a ministerial group dedicated to follow-up the work to reach the SDGs. Colombia was the first country to enshrine them in its legal system," he said.

Santos, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 for the peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrillas, indicated that in recent years there has been "noticeable progress" towards the Sustainable Development Goals, although he described it as "insufficient."

The SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, which seek to ensure the prosperity of the planet's inhabitants by 2030, were adopted to continue the UN agenda after the end of the Millennium Development Goals. EFE
