North Korea says Kim supervised ‘super-large multiple rocket launcher' test

Seoul, Aug 25 (efe-epa).- North Korea on Sunday said its leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the test of a “super-large multiple rocket launcher” a day earlier.

According to state news agency KCNA, the latest weapons test carried out on Saturday – its seventh launch in less than a month — was a success.

“The test-fire proved that all the tactical and technological specifications of the system correctly reached the preset indexes," KCNA said.

The agency said that Kim Jong-un praised the launch and stressed the need to “push ahead with an indomitable offensive campaign”.

According to KCNA, Kim also emphasized on stepping up “the development of Korean-style strategic and tactical weapons for resolutely frustrating the ever-mounting military threats and pressure offensive (of) hostile forces”.

On Saturday, the South Korean military said the projectiles fired by North Korea into the sea off its east coast could be short-range ballistic missiles based on the data collected about the distance (380 kilometers/236 miles), their speed and the maximum altitude (97 kms) they achieved.

However, as the projectiles flew at a higher altitude than the earlier tests, they also did not rule out the possibility of Pyongyang having tested a new type of missiles, according to military sources.

Carrying out repeated weapon tests since Jul. 25, North Korea has issued a series of threats against the South and the United States due to their joint military exercises, which concluded last week.

The intensification of military activity by the regime coupled with aggressive statements is viewed as a show of strength ahead of a possible resumption of dialog over denuclearization with the United States.

That was agreed upon by Kim and US President Donald Trump in their last meeting at the inter-Korean border in June. However, no concrete developments in this regard have taken place so far. EFE-EPA
