Mexican state looks to learn from China's special economic zones

Shanghai, Nov 14 (efe-epa).- A high-level delegation from the western Mexican state of Michoacan paid a visit Tuesday to a special economic zone in the Chinese city of Suzhou in search of pointers for developing the Pacific port of Lazaro Cardenas.

"We are very interested in knowing about this experience and in seeing how we can learn from the steps they followed," Gov. Silvano Aureoles said in a meeting with representatives of the Suzhou Industrial Park.

Located about an hour's drive from Shanghai, the Suzhou park was established in the 1990s with investment from the government of Singapore and became one of the first special economic regions in China to be fueled by foreign capital.

"We wanted to see how we can strengthen, construct an agreement or alliance with our project for a special economic zone in Lazaro Cardenas, drawing on the experience developed here," the governor said.

Lazaro Cardenas municipality is home to Mexico's busiest cargo port and is among the first of a planned 10 special economic zones established under an initiative launched in 2014 by the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Offering tax incentives and other benefits, the zones are meant to become hubs of economic growth.

Alfredo Nolasco, director of promotion for the special economic zones and a member of the Michoacan delegation, told EFE that Lazaro Cardenas is one of the zones where planning for the initiative is most advanced.
