Samsung promotes head of chips division to be vice president

Seoul, Dec 6 (efe-epa).- Samsung Electronics on Thursday announced the appointment of the head of its semiconductor division as vice president.

The company said in a statement that the decision was based on Kim Ki-nam's ability to lead. It added that he was able to "promote the competitiveness" of the company to "become a global superpower" in chip manufacturing.

Kim, 60, who has been president and CEO of the device solution division, which manufactures chips, graduated in electronic engineering from Seoul National University in 1981, the year in which he began working for Samsung.

In 1994, he completed his doctorate, also in electronic engineering, from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Kim, head of the device solution division since 2017, has also worked in other branches of the company.

Under Kim's leadership, Samsung has established itself as the world's largest chip manufacturer.

In the third quarter of this year, the chips division posted a new record profit of 13.65 trillion won ($12.2 billion), an increase of 37 percent year-on-year.

This branch of business has been leading the way for Samsung, which has seen its smart phones losing market share in an increasingly competitive environment.
