Woody Allen wraps up filming of new romantic comedy set in Spain

San Sebastian, Spain, Aug 16 (efe-epa).- American director Woody Allen on Friday completed shooting on his latest movie, a romantic comedy filmed in Spain and set against the backdrop of this northern city's San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Christoph Waltz and Elena Anaya head up the cast, which also features Louis Garrel, Gina Gershon, Sergi Lopez and Wallace Shawn.

The film, which still does not have an official title and is due to premiere in 2020, tells the story of an American married couple who attend the SSIFF, a festival that awarded Allen its Donostia Award - a career-achievement prize - in 2004.

"She has an affair with a brilliant French movie director, and he falls in love with a beautiful Spanish woman who lives there," The Mediapro Studio, one of the film's production companies, said in a statement at the start of shooting in June.

"It is a comedy-romance that resolves itself in a funny but romantic way."

San Sebastian's late 19th-century Miramar Palace was the final location used for the filming, which was concluded a week ahead of schedule.

After the shooting was finalized, some of the furniture and other props, as well as clothes and accessories used by the film's extras, were sold to raise money for the San Sebastian-based Zaporeak Project, some of whose volunteers work on the Greek island of Lesbos and prepare meals for distribution among refugees stranded there after fleeing war in the Middle East and Africa.

The 83-year-old Allen's latest film marks the fourth collaboration between Spain-based The Mediapro Studio and the acclaimed American director and screenwriter.

The other three were "Midnight in Paris," "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."

The new film also represents Allen's fourth collaboration with acclaimed Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro.

The 2008 film "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," which also was a romantic comedy shot in Spain (in the cities of Barcelona, Aviles and Oviedo), won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

Spain's Penelope Cruz also won a best-actress Oscar for her role in that picture.

"Midnight in Paris" (2011), for which Allen won an Oscar for best original screenplay, was set in the French capital.

Allen also has shot movies in other parts of Europe in recent years, with the 2005 picture "Match Point" having been filmed in London and "To Rome with Love" (2012) shot in Italy's capital. EFE-EPA
