Australia beat India by 34 runs in first ODI in Sydney

Sydney, Australia, Jan 12 (efe-epa).- Australia bounced back from their first ever test-series loss at home against India on Saturday by winning the first One-Day International match against the visitors by 34 runs.

A brilliant century by Rohit Sharma went in vain as India failed to chase 289 after a top-order collapse against young pacer Jhye Richardson and debutant Jason Behrendorff.

Australia chose to bat after winning the toss and reached a respectable total despite a slow start thanks to half-centuries by Peter Handscomb, Shaun Marsh and Usman Khawaja.

India lost their first three wickets for just 4 runs in the chase before Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sharma put up a slow 137-run partnership.

With the asking rate climbing, Sharma kept going from one end as wickets tumbled and hit 10 fours and six 6s in his 133 before falling in the 45th over.

Richardson, playing in just his 5th ODI, notched up career best figures of 4/26, while Behrendorff was 2/39 in his 10 overs.

The win comes as a relief for the hosts after they were completely outplayed in the 1-2 test series loss to India.

The next match of the three-match ODI series will be played in Adelaide on Tuesday.

Brief Score

Australia 288/5 (50 overs)

(P Handscomb 73, U Khawaja 59, Kuldeep Yadav 55/2)

India 254/9 (50 overs)

(R Sharma 133, M Dhoni 51, J Richardson 26/4)
