Valencia (Spain), May 24 (efe-epa).- Former Valencia goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares expects his former side to be focused and play on the counterattack at the upcoming final of the Copa del Rey because Barcelona cannot be defeated by taking the ball of them and dominating the game.
“It would be great if they could be like that,” Cañizares, a now sports anchor, told Efe in an interview, in which he said that he did not expect Valencia’s coach Marcelino Garcia to change the team’s system for this crucial game.
Cañizares believes that Marcelino will match previous game plans that have historically proved successful against the Catalans.
“Valencia's system for effectiveness, conviction of the coach and assimilation of the players is 4-4-2. I expect the two lines of four to know how to defend well,” Cañizares said.
“From there, I expect a well-armed team that uses one of its best weapons, which is the transition from defense to attack and the speed of players in reaching the goal with a few passes, which is what has caused more damage to Barça historically,” he added.
Recalling the sneaky corner Barcelona conceded in the UEFA Champion League semi-final second leg clash with Liverpool, Cañizares explained that Valencia should pay attention to the set pieces in Saturday’s game.
"The best players are not usually the most attentive of the most aggressive and we must try to take advantage. But then there is the success percentage of (Barcelona’s star Lionel) Messi in set pieces that no one else has and that forces us to avoid mistakes,” the 49-year-old added.
Cañizares pointed out that winning the Copa del Rey title would be the icing on the cake of Valencia’s centenary celebrations.
“We, Valencians, have opened our hearts a bit because we share the same passion,” he continued.
"The passion of the social masses has once again been demonstrated, and it was clear in the match of legends that people do not forget those of us who wear the jersey and that, with success or not, we show commitment,” he stressed.
