Hamilton bags pole position for Monaco GP with circuit record

Monte Carlo (Monaco), May 25 (efe-epa).- British Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) on Saturday secured the pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix, posting a circuit record of one minute and 10.116s.

The current driver standings led his teammate Valtteri Bottas of Finland by 0.086s as Mercedes continues to dominate the 2019 Formula One season and seems on track for a sixth one-two win in as many races.

“This is the race every driver dreams of. You put everything into it. We've arrived with a great car. This pole means so much. I had to dig deeper than ever. The lap was beautiful,” the Formula One Twitter account quoted the Briton as saying after the qualifying.

His teammate, meanwhile, said: "I felt I had it today, but made a couple of small mistakes on my flying lap. I'd prefer to be on pole, but there's no point giving up on Saturday – it's a long race tomorrow, and anything can happen."

Red Bull’s Dutch driver Max Verstappen came third, followed by Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel of Germany 0.475 and 0.781s off the pace respectively and both are to kick off the race from the second row.

“P3 is good – with 10 minutes to the session there wasn't even a floor on the car," he said according to the Formula One Twitter account."Of course, very happy to be third."

Ferrari saw their chances to fight for positive outcome in Sunday’s race reduce due to a grave error in the strategy.

A simple calculation failure prevented young local favorite Charles Leclerc from making the cut in the second qualifying round (Q2).

Leclerc said afterwards that he had yet to understand what happened, adding that he was upset to be starting the race from 16th spot.

Surprisingly, Spaniard Carlos Sainz (McLaren) made it to the third qualifying round (Q3) and will start the race from the fifth row as he came ninth.

Five races into the season, Hamilton leads the driver standings with 112 points, ahead of Bottas, who has collected 105 points, nearly doubling third-placed Verstappen’s 66, a serious reflection of Mercedes’ domination thus far. EFE
