Ronaldo's lowest scoring average ever during 1st season at Juventus

By Manu Azpicueta

Madrid, May 26 (efe-epa).- Cristiano Ronaldo's first season at Juventus was not as good as the Portuguese star would have liked given that his scoring average was his lowest-ever in the past 10 campaigns.

Missing the final 2018-2019 Serie A matchday, Ronaldo has played 31 league games with the Turin-based club scoring 21 goals, the lowest since his last season with Manchester United, when he collected 18 goals in 33 Premier League games.

As if that were not enough, Ronaldo's average over this season has been just 0.56 goals per game, his lowest since the 2008-2009 campaign, when he averaged 0.67 goals per match.

The same applies to the UEFA Champions League, where he has scored six goals in nine games this season, an average of 0.67 goals per match.

To find a lower average for Ronaldo, one must go back to 2010-2011, his second season at Real Madrid, when his average was down at 0.50 goals per match, scoring six times in twice as many matches.

However, it seems odd that the nine goals he has scored this season provide an average below the seven goals he scored in 2009-2010, when he played just six matches as Madrid was knocked out of the last-16 by Olympique Lyonnais.

Back then, he missed two group stage matches, both against Milan, due to injury.

Ronaldo was at his most prolific at the Champions League during the 2013-2014 season, when Madrid won its 10th title, scoring 17 goals in the 11 matches he played. One of those goals was from the 12-yard spot in the Lisbon final against Atletico Madrid.

As for the Italian domestic cup, Ronaldo has played two games in Coppa Italia this season but did not score any goals, a situation that has not occurred since the 2006-2007 EFL Cup with Manchester United, when he failed to score in the only match he played against Southend United FC.

At Real Madrid, Ronaldo took the field on seven occasions in the Copa del Rey scoring at least one goal in each outing. The Portuguese star did not play in the 2009-2010, 2015-2016 or 2017-2018 editions.

Ronaldo's highest scoring tally in the Spanish cup competition came in the 2012-2013 season, when he notched seven goals in seven matches, as Madrid was the eventual runner-up after being defeated in the final by cross-town rival Atletico in extra time.

Thus, counting the three competitions he participated in this season, Ronaldo has scored a total of 28 goals in 43 games with Juventus, which is 0.65 goals per match on average.

To find another correspondingly low number, we must go back to his last season at Man Utd, when he scored a total of 25 goals in 57 matches, an average of 0.47 goals per match.

Ronaldo's numbers this season are far from what he registered during his nine years with Real Madrid, the club he joined in the summer of 2009 ane where he exceeded the average of one goal per game across all competitions in eight of his nine years with the Spanish capital side.

His highest figures came in the 2014-15 season with 1.23 goals per game, when he took the field in a total of 61 encounters.

In that season, Real Madrid won no trophies as it was the La Liga runner-up behind Barcelona and knocked out of Champions League semi-finals and the Copa del Rey round of 16.

The Spanish powerhouse lifted only the trophies of the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in that season.

At the collective level, Ronaldo has added the Serie A to his domestic league titles, having won three Premier Leagues with Man Utd and two La Liga crowns with Madrid.

He increased his title record to 30, including his spells at the four clubs he played for and the UEFA Euro 2016 he claimed with Portugal's national team. EFE.
