Warriors late show seals Game 5 win vs Raptors to extend NBA Finals

Toronto, Canada, Jun 10 (efe-epa).- The Golden State Warriors defeated the Toronto Raptors 106-105 on Monday to win a dramatic game 5 and extend the NBA Finals series, which is finely poised at 3-2.

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson scored clutch three-pointers with under two minutes on the clock during a 9-0 run to come back from six points down and quell a fourth quarter Toronto surge which had threatened to take the game and the title away from Golden State.

The champions in three of the last four years had to dig deep, particularly after losing star forward Kevin Durant in the first half after he hurt his achilles on his comeback from a calf injury that had kept him out of action since the Western Conference semifinals a month ago.

After an impressive start in which he scored 11 points, Durant went down during the first half, and was later seen leaving the arena on crutches to deal a major blow to the Warriors’ hopes of overcoming the 3-1 series deficit.

But in Curry and Thompson, known as the “Splash Brothers” for their unprecedented shooting success from distance, the Warriors boast two of the finest shooters basketball has ever seen.

“It’s just about ‘keep shooting’”, Curry said. “We have a whole lot to give (in game 6). We know how hard it is. We know how hard it’s gonna be. It’s gonna be a dogfight, but we’ll be ready.”

Curry finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Klay Thompson added 26 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Thanks to an impressive shooting night which saw them make 20 out of 42 three-point attempts, Golden State had led for much of the game, and were up by as much as 12 points in the third quarter before Toronto began to reduce the deficit and set up the dramatic, grandstand finish.

Kawhi Leonard scored back to back three-pointers late in the 4th quarter to give the Raptors a six-point lead with less than three minutes left, as the Raptors looked set to become the first franchise from outside the United States to win the NBA championship.

Leonard ended with 26 points and 11 rebounds in a typically all-round display, while Kyle Lowry added 18 points.

Spain’s Marc Gasol scored 17 points and made eight rebounds as the Raptors let the chance to seal their first ever title on their home court slip away, at least until a potential Game 7 on Sunday.

Toronto will travel to Oakland for Game 6 on Thursday, hoping to repeat their games 3 and 4 performance when they won on the road at the Oracle Arena.
