Jovic proud of joining Real Madrid, wants to win Champions League

(Update 1: adds quotes, details)

Madrid, Jun 12 (efe-epa).- Serbia striker Luka Jovic spoke of his enthusiasm at becoming a Real Madrid player when he met the press for the first time at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium's facilities, following a trouble-free medical check-up and official presentation to fans on Wednesday.

The club's director of Institutional Relations, Emilio Butragueño, attended the press conference and briefly welcomed Jovic at the beginning of the press conference, paying tribute to the new player's talent and wishing him success at the club.

"Stepping out at the Bernabeu gives an incredible feeling, and it's a great pleasure for me to be here today," said Jovic.

Nonetheless, the 21-year-old forward seemed to be timid, giving short answers to journalists' questions, akin to his brief speech in the presentation event with the club's president, Florentino Perez.

"You can say I'm timid but I do not want to talk about that," he said, adding, "I'd like to win the Champions (League)."

Jovic said he had yet to speak with the team's French head coach, Zinedine Zidane, but he intended to give his everything as he will have to learn much about the capital side and Madrid's excellent players.

"I will not say a number of goals (I will score but) I will try my best in every game, " the young Serbia player revealed, stressing that he could play in a formation with a lone striker or two. Jovic also paid special tribute to the team's veteran French forward, Karim Benzema.

"Benzema is one of the best forwards in the world, when he arrived (here in Madrid) I was 11 years old and I hope to learn a lot from him," he said.

"The competition is going to be very high but with the effort I can have an opportunity, and if I have it and I'll take it. If I do not, (then) it's my fault."

Jovic also said that he does not pay attention to any side talk or rumors, saying: "I (only) focus on playing."

He then expressed his feelings when he stepped out to the Bernabeu pitch for the first time, clad in Real Madrid famed white jersey, to salute the team's fans just after the presentation event.

As for Belgium play maker and star Eden Hazard, who is to be presented Thursday as another of Madrid's new signings, Jovic said Hazard is one of the best players in the world and it would be a pleasure to share the locker room with him.

Earlier in the day, Jovic successfully passed medical tests before he attended his presentation event along with the club's president Florentino Perez, who praised the Serbian international striker.

"A striker who claimed several achievements in Europe is now a part of the great family of Real Madrid," Perez said. "We welcome Luka Jovic."

"You arrive at the most honored club in the world, only at the age of 21," the club's president added, referring to the record 13 crowns Madrid clinched in the European elite club competition, UEFA Champions League.

On June 4, Madrid announced the Jovic deal; which is a six-season contract with the club, coming from Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt, where Jovic notched a total of 27 goals and made seven assists in 48 appearances across the 2018/2019 season.

Despite his young age, to-date Jovic has played for a number of well-known clubs such as; Serbia's Red Star Belgrade, Portugal's SL Benfica and Frankfurt.

He won a total of eight honors thus far; two Serbian SuperLiga crowns (2013/14 and 2015/16), two Portuguese League titles (2015/16 and 2016/17), the 2017/18 German Cup, the 2016/17 Portuguese Cup, the 2016 Portuguese Super Cup and 2015/16 Portuguese League Cup. EFE

Madrid, Jun 12 (efe-epa).- Serbia striker Luka Jovic was officially presented as a new Real Madrid player at the Santiago Bernabeu facilities, after passing the relevant medical check on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old Jovic briefly made his first statements as a Madrid player, expressing his genuine happiness to be signing for the Spanish powerhouse.

"I'm the happiest guy in the world for having signed a contract with such a big club," the Serb said during the presentation event.

"I'm very excited and convinced that I've taken the best option and I'm going to give everything to help Real Madrid win everything," the forward concluded.

Earlier in the day, Jovic successfully passed the customary medical tests, before he attended the presentation event along with the club's President, Florentino Perez, who praised the Serbian international striker.

"A striker who claimed several achievements in Europe is now a part of the great family of Real Madrid," Perez said. "We welcome Luka Jovic."

"You arrive at the most honored club in the world, only at the age of 21," the club's president added, referring to the record 13 crowns Madrid clinched in the European elite club competition, the UEFA Champions League.

On June 4, Madrid announced the Jovic deal; a deal which who signed a six-season contract with the club, coming from Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt, where he notched a total of 27 goals and made seven assists in 48 appearances across the 2018/2019 season.

Following the presentation, Jovic got onto the pitch, clad in Real Madrid's famed white jersey, to salute the team's fans who were in attendance in the stadium to welcome him.

Jovic then met the press in Madrid's press center where the gathered journalists had to wait as headphones were sought for the Serb so he could hear the translations of the questions.

Asked why he had chosen Madrid ahead of other potentially more lucrative deals, like for example, with Barcelona, the forward said he wasn't aware of such offers.

"To be honest, I didn't know about many other offers, my agent takes care of that," he said, but added had been a fan of the club since his early youth and as a boy even used to sleep in a Real Madrid jersey.

"It's true, a friend of my dad's gave it to me as a present and since I was a youngster I was a Real Madrid fan, like a lot of kids, because it's the biggest club in the world."

He said he wasn't aiming to score a specific number of goals, but was going to try to give his best, "play as much as possible and show what I can do."

He said he had not yet spoken to head coach Zinedine Zidane, but that he was not fussy what position he was placed in.

"At Eintracht I played just off the main striker," he said, adding, "I can play on my own, I can play with another striker, I don't care really, I'm here to play, to fight and I hope to have a chance to show what I can do."

He said his favorite Madrid player had been Cristiano Ronaldo and said he was eager to play up front alongside Karim Benzema.

"He's definitely one of the best strikers in the world. When he came here I was an 11-year-old, so I hope to learn a lot from him."

The Serb said he was aware that last season was not Madrid's best, but he hoped next season would be "a lot better."

While he confirmed that last season he had not played against any Spanish teams to try to get a feel for the style of football in the country, he was an admirer of La Liga.

"I think the Spanish league along with the Premier League are the best leagues in the world and I hope to play well." EFE
