London, Jun 12 (efe-epa).- Manchester United announced Wednesday the signing of Daniel James from second-tier Swansea City.
He will join the Premiership side for the next five seasons, with an option to extend the contract for one more year.
Neither of the clubs has revealed the financial details but local media estimated it was a £15 million ($19.1 million) deal.
"Manchester United is delighted to confirm the signing of Daniel James from Swansea City, subject to international clearance," the club said on its website.
"The 21-year-old Wales international made his professional debut for Swansea City in February 2018 and his senior Wales debut in November 2018, having previously represented the nation at various youth levels."
The young player stated that his transfer to United was a dream came true saying on the club website that "every kid grows up wanting to play for Manchester United."
"This is one of the best days of my life and a challenge I am really looking forward to," he said after the signing.
"The Premier League is the best league in the world and Manchester United is the perfect place for me to continue to develop as a player."
United's head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised the winger's skills, quality and professional attitude, adding that he deserves to be in the squad.
James posted later on his Twitter account saying: "I'm very proud to join the biggest football club in the world.
"This is a new and exciting chapter in my life and I can't wait to get started. Thank you to everyone who has shown faith in me.
"Hard work starts now!"
Swansea also released a statement to confirm the deal, bidding farewell to their former player.
"We are obviously hugely disappointed to lose a player of Daniel's quality, especially after such a fantastic breakthrough season for us and the enjoyment he gave to those watching him," Swansea City chairman, Trevor Birch, said.
"Everyone at the club cannot speak highly enough of Daniel, not just as a footballer but also as a person."
He added: "We can only thank Daniel for his contribution over the past season and the pleasure he brought to so many of us watching his performances.
"I'm sure he has a great future ahead of him and we wish him every success in his career."
Birch added that the deal was "inevitable" as James had one year left in his contract with Swansea, so it was important to "achieve the right value for the club."
James made a total of 38 appearances for Swansea across all competitions in the 2018/2019 season, notching five goals and making 10 assists. EFE
