Serena Williams eliminates Carla Suarez from Wimbledon

London, Jul 8 (efe-epa).- Serena Williams ended Carla Suarez Navarro’s Wimbledon hopes with a straight-set win on Monday.

The United States star took 64 minutes to hand the Spaniard a 6-2, 6-2 defeat, ending Navarro’s run in the round of 16.

“That's a victory in itself, to know that I'm feeling better no matter what. I'm on the right path. I finally found the solution. I can be strong for the rest of the year,” Williams said after the win, referring to her overcoming a previous injury.

The former WTA top-ranked player made her 14th Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance, in a bid to secure her 24th Grand Slam win that would put her equal with Australian Margaret Court.

Williams, 37, fired 21 winners and won five break points out of 11, saving two out of three the Spaniard created.

Next up in the last-eight round, she is to take on fellow American, Alison Riske, who stunned current world number one, Ashleigh Barty with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.

Riske reached her first ever Grand Slam quarters in her career as a pro, ending her opponent’s winning streak at 15 matches.

Despite conceding 12 aces, the 29-year-old made no double faults, committing just 15 unforced errors comparing to Barty’s 25, and firing 30 winners.

The 23-year-old Australian, who also won the 2019 grass-court Birmingham, saw her hopes evaporate, the 2019 French Open champion was trying to be the first player to win the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double since Martina Navratilova in 1984.

Elsewhere, former top-ranked Simona Halep ended a surprising run from 15-year-old American qualifier Coco Gauff, after the Romanian earned a 6-3, 6-3 win within 75 minutes.

Gauff, who won the Roland Garros junior title less than a month ago, became the youngest player ever to reach Wimbledon second round, after her compatriot Jennifer Capriati made the semis at the same age in 1990, eliminating big names, including Venus Williams.

Following her outstanding run, Gauff will climb to 139th in the world ranking, after she started the London-based major in 313th place.

Seventh-seeded Halep, who reached the last-eight for the third time in her career, is to play 50th-ranked Shuai Zhang of China who eliminated Dayana Yastrenska with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win.

Another quarters clash will pit Ukrainian Elina Svitolina against Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.

Svitolina secured her first ever Wimbledon quarterfinals appearance after beating Croatian Petra Martic 6-4, 6-2 within almost two hours, while Muchova surprisingly ousted her countrywoman Karolina Pliskova 4-6, 7-5, 13-11, after more than three hours of play.

Pliskova’s defeat enabled Barty to hold on the WTA ranking top spot.

Another unseeded Czech player, Barbora Strycova, also made the last-eight round at the expense of Elise Mertens of Belgium, with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win.

Strycova is set to square off against Briton Johanna Konta, who beat Petra Kvitova 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. EFE-EPA

Djokovic reaches his 11th Wimbledon quarters in 13 years

London, Jul 8 (efe-epa).- Djokovic secured his 11th appearance in the Wimbledon quarterfinals over the last 13 years, with a straight-set win over Ugo Humbert on Monday.

It took the four-time champion at the All England Club’s grass-court Grand Slam an hour and 42 minutes to prevail 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 over Humbert.

After losing a set to Hubert Hurkacz in the previous round, the world number one did not allow the Frenchman to create a single break point.

Djokovic however seized on five break points out of nine he created, as well as firing 25 winners.

Next up, Djokovic is to clash against David Goffin, as the Belgian ousted Fernando Verdasco after a 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 within three hours.

It will be the seventh head-to-head encounter between Djokovic and Goffin, with 5-1 win record for the Serb.

Goffin’s lone victory over Djokovic was in their last match in the 2017 clay-court Monte Carlo quarterfinals.

Elsewhere, Sam Querrey made the last-eight round after emerging victorious in the all-American match against Tennys Sandgren, 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5).

Querrey is to square off against third-seeded Rafael Nadal who prevailed over Joao Sousa with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 win.

Meanwhile, Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut made it through the last-eight round with a 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 win over Frenchman Benoit Paire.
