Silverstone, UK, July 12 (efe-epa).- Red Bull’s French driver Pierre Gasly on Friday set the pace in the first free practice ahead of the British Grand Prix held at the Silverstone’s circuit.
Gasly made the most of the final stretch of the session to post the fastest time, although he did not stand out during the early going neither did his teammate Max Verstappen of the Netherlands.
Mercedes’ Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas was in the lead from the start of a session that was halted to remove Kimi Raikkonen’s Alfa Romero which broke down in the middle of the circuit.
Bottas, who even got confused and stopped at Haas’ garage instead of the Mercedes’one, was leading with a time of 1:27.832 ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton of the United Kingdom, who was 0.290s slower than the Fin.
As it rained for a few minutes with half an hour to go, drivers preferred not to take risks, resulting in Spaniard Carlos Sainz (McLaren) being the only driver on the circuit at some point.
With the drivers going at full steam in the final stretch, Gasly was the fastest with a time of 1:27.173, nearly half a second ahead of Bottas (0.456s).
Verstappen, meanwhile, managed to take the third spot 0.836s off the pace, ahead of Hamilton, who was 0.949s slower than Gasly.
Saiz, who got to be fourth at some point, had to settle for the tenth spot.
Later in the day, the second free session is set to take place.
