Bottas takes pole for Silverstone, 10th of his career

Silverstone, United Kingdom, Jul 13 (efe-epa).- Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas on Saturday took the pole position for the British Formula 1 Grand Prix at Silverstone.

On his soft tires, Bottas was fastest, covering the 5,891-meter circuit in 1:25.093 on his third attempt.

"Feels good. It's been pretty close all weekend," said Bottas after qualifying first. "It's not easy to get a good lap together. I'm happy to be on top."

His teammate Lewis Hamilton of the UK will start Sunday’s race from the front after he came second, 0.006s off Bottas' pace.

"Ultimately not good enough. A mistake on my first lap and the second one got away from us," said Hamilton.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc of Monaco will share the second row with Red Bull's Max Verstappen of the Netherlands as they came third and fourth respectively. EFE-EPA

Ferrari dominates 3rd free practice at Silverstone

Silverstone, United Kingdom, Jul 13 (efe-epa).- Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc of Monaco and Sebastian Vettel of Germany on Saturday dominated the third and final free practice session before the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Leclerc posted a time of 1:25.905, 0.026s ahead of his teammate Vettel, a four-time world champion.

Mercedes’ Briton Lewis Hamilton, the defending champion and the overall classification leader, came third, 0.049s off the pace.

It rained early on in the session, prompting teams to have second thoughts about which tires to employ.

Mercedes went for intermediate tires initially but track was not wet enough for them.

Once the track dried, most of the teams plumped for soft or medium tires.

In this situation Hamilton and his teammate Bottas led – as they did in the second free practice – until the Ferrari drivers showed up.

First to get past the Mercedes drivers was Leclerc, followed by Vettel.

Bottas had a tough day in office after leading Friday’s second free practice session. He came sixth, behind Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly (1:26.118) and Max Verstappen (1:26.440).

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz came 12th.

The qualifying round will take place later in the day to decide who starts where on Sunday.

Heading into the race, the 10th of the season, Hamilton leads the driver standings with 197 points, 31 ahead of Bottas.

Verstappen is third with 126 points.

Hamilton has hoisted the trophy at Silverstone on five previous occasions. EFE-EPA
