Madrid, Aug 19 (EFE).- A goal by Barcelona’s Argentine star Lionel Messi against Real Betis was nominated on Monday for the FIFA Puskas Award, a recognition for the best goal.
Messi scored the goal against Betis at the Benito Villamarín stadium on 17 March when he chipped the ball over goalkeeper Pau Lopez.
LA Galaxy Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who claimed the award in 2013, is also on the nominees list thanks to a goal he scored against Toronto FC on 15 September.
Bayern Leverkusen’s Matheus Cunha of Brazil is competing with a goal he scored against RB Leipzig.
Sampdoria’s Fabio Quagliarella has also been nominated for the award for a goal against Napoli during a home match.
A volley by Crystal Palace’s Andros Towsend in his team’s win over Manchester City earned him a spot on the list too.
The list of 10 names also included Hungary’s Daniel Zsori (Debrecen FC) and Juan Fernando Quintero of Colombia (River Plate).
Zsori made the list for a goal he scored against Ferencváros TC, while Quintero was nominated for a long-range free kick he capitalized on against Racing Club.
The public vote for the best goal started at 1 pm GMT on Monday. EFE
