Holland is top medalwinner at Euro Equestrian Championship

Rotterdam, Netherlands, Aug 25 (efe-epa).- The Netherlands finished with the top medal haul at the European Equestrian Championships this year in the Dutch city of Rotterdam thanks to the success of its horses and riders in adapted classic dressage.

Following the host country in the total medal count were Germany with seven, Denmark with four, Norway with two golds and Great Britain with seven total medals, but just one gold.

Belgium was in sixth place with eight medals - one gold, one silver and six bronzes.

The Netherlands won five golds, three silvers and three bronzes, while Germany's count was 3-3-1.

All of Holland's golds were won in adapted classic dressage, also known as Para Dressage, in both the team and individual events.

Regarding the outstanding figures at the competition, once more Germany's Isabell Werth took top honors in dressage, walking away with the Grand Prix Special award, the Grand Prix Freestyle award and the team award.

The Belgian team received special mention in obstacle jumping, winning the event for the first time in history.

Meanwhile, Switzerland's Martin Fuchs and Clooney 51 on Sunday became the new Show Jumping champions, finishing ahead of favorite Ben Maher and Explosion W, of the United Kingdom.

Fuchs got an overall 4.46 penalty points to win the gold medal, while the 36-year-old Briton claimed the silver medal after getting 4.62 penalty points.

Fuchs's win on Sunday secured Switzerland its lone medal in the tournament, while Britain got a total of seven medals (1, 5, 1).

At this edition of the European event, organized by the Federacion Ecuestre Internacional (FEI), Belgium, Great Britain and France qualified in jumping for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, for which Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands had already qualified in previous competitions.

The equestrian championships were first held in Rotterdam in 1957, with this being the 34th edition of the competition.

Fuchs becomes European Equestrian Show Jumping Champion

Rotterdam, Netherlands, Aug 25 (efe-epa).- Switzerland's Martin Fuchs and Clooney 51 on Sunday became the new Show Jumping champions at the 2019 FEI European Equestrian Championships, finishing ahead of favorite Ben Maher and Explosion W, of the United Kingdom.

Fuchs got an overall 4.46 penalty points to win the gold medal, while the 36-year-old Briton claimed the silver medal after getting 4.62 penalty points.

"I'm very happy to be winning here and to finally stand up on top of the podium," Fuchs said following his win, hailing Clooney 51 as "the best horse I could ever wish for."

It was an unexpected gold medal for the 27-year-old Swiss, as he has finished the first three rounds with 3.46 penalty points, while Maher had only 0.62 penalty points.

"It looked very much like I would be second again," Fuchs said. "I didn't think I would be here in gold, that he (Maher) would make a fault."

In the final rounds of competition among the best 25 riders, Fuchs committed a time fault that cost him another point.

Then, Maher put together a great performance with no mistakes.

Both the Swiss and the Briton made the final round, among the total of 12 riders, with Fuchs making no errors at all, while Maher's Explosion W made a jumping fault, knocking down a rail in the middle of the course to lose the first spot.

The Briton said it was his fault, not the horse's, as he wanted to make a short jump to have a faster course out of the pool.

"Explosion jumped really well," Maher said. "He didn't need to hit that rail, actually, but that's the sport. I'm looking ahead with a positive mindset."

Belgium's Jos Verlooy, 23, and Igor completed the podium, with 6.68 points, having won a Team Jumping gold medal on Friday.

"I'm ecstatic. All the honor goes to my horse," Verlooy said. "The pressure was very high, but I was confident and my feeling was just great.

"This week really paid off. I did have one down in the first round, but I'm a happy rider," Verlooy said.

Sunday was the last day of a tournament that saw the Netherlands atop the medal standings with five golds, three silvers and two bronzes.

Germany came in second (3, 3, 1) and Denmark finished in the third spot (2, 0, 2).

Fuchs's win on Sunday secured Switzerland its lone medal in the tournament, while Britain got a total of seven medals (1, 5, 1). EFE-EPA
