Beijing, China, Sep 12 (efe-epa).- Spain will take on Australia on Friday in the semifinals of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China.
It will be the second time that they have played for a basketball top-level medal.
The first time the two clashed was at the 19th Olympic Basketball Tournament in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro when the Spaniards claimed a bronze medal at the Aussie's expense after a thrilling competition that ended 89-88.
The upcoming encounter looked evenly matched between the sides for the quality of their squads and unbeaten runs in the tournament so far.
The Australians, who are striving for a maiden World Cup medal, will be eager for revenge on the Iberian side in the next match.
Both teams have reached a decisive point in the world cup having accomplished their initial objectives by securing a place in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
This means that a ticket for the final match in Beijing will be a bonus award for Spain and Australia.
Spain's coach Sergio Scariolo warned that Australia is a tough rival, against which his team will have to know how to compete, as the rival team has better physical abilities than the Spaniards.
Scariolo praised Australian's world cup campaign, team and especially coach Andrej Lemanis, saying that Spain's players will have to put their best feet forward to get past their Australian rival.
Lemanis said his team was happy following a quarterfinal win against Czech Republic, but that players and coaches know they all are aware that the campaign is still ongoing and they have much to do.
There will be plenty of interesting match-ups on the court such as those between Australia's Patty Mills, who plays at NBA's San Antonio Spurs, and Spain's and Phoenix Suns' Ricky Rubio.
On the way to its first semis appearance, Australia prevailed over Canada (108-92), Senegal (81-68), and Lithuania (87-82) in the first phase, then got past Dominican Republic (82-76) and France (100-98) in the second, before edging the Czech Republic in the quarters on Wednesday (82-70).
In these six games, Australia registered average stats of 90 points, 34.8 rebounds and 24.7 assists, as well as a 58.5 accuracy percentage from the two-point range and 40 percent accuracy from behind the three-point line. EFE-EPA
