Marquez tops Quartararo in thrilling end to San Marino MotoGP

Misano Adriatico, Italy, Sep 15 (efe-epa).- Spaniard Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda RC 213 V) on Sunday prevailed over Frenchman Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha YZR M 1) in the very last lap to emerge victorious at the San Marino MotoGP for his seventh win of the season, moving a step closer toward the 2019 world title.

Marquez increased his lead atop of the general classification to 93 points, which will enable him to mathematically clinch the title in Thailand, with four races to go before the end of the championship.

This is Marquez's 77th victory of his career and his 51st MotoGP triumph, securing the Spanish rider's 89th podium appearance, surpassing Italy's Giacomo Agostini.

Quartararo, who led during the most of the race, had to settle for the second spot, while Spaniard Maverick Viñales (Yamaha YZR M 1) came in third.

Viñales had the perfect start to the race from pole position, with Marquez maneuvering to avoid a fall and falling behind Fabio Quartararo, Franco Morbidelli and Marquez respectively.

Pol Espargaro (KTM RC 16), who kicked off the race from the first row, fell down to the fifth spot, ahead of Alex Rins (Suzuki GSX RR) and Valentino Rossi (Yamaha YZR M 1) respectively.

Marquez managed to get past Morbidelli before even the first lap was concluded to start chasing Viñales and Quartararo.

While the three riders - Maruqez, Viñales and Quartararo - lived up to the expectations by leading the race, Marquez's closest rival in the general classification, Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Desmosedici GP19), was struggling in the eighth spot after a bad start to the race.

During the third lap, Quartararo managed to surpass Viñales with a relative ease, while the Repsol Honda rider was in the third spot having a comfortable head.

In the fourth lap, Marquez surpassed Viñales and then started to chase Yamaha's French rider, with Viñales third, ahead of Morbidelli and Pol Espargaró respectively.

Quartararo maintained the lead, with Marquez on his tail awaiting the perfect minute to surpass him for his seventh victory of the season.

It was not till the final lap when Marquez overpowered Quartararo, who managed to hit back, before the Repsol Honda rider took the lead for good. EFE-EPA
