Volunteers give free food to Kuala Lumpur underprivileged during Ramadan

Kuala Lumpur, May 31 (efe-epa).- Around 100 underprivileged people in the Malaysian capital were given free food during the midnight hour as part of the meal taken before the fasting begins at dawn during the Ramadan period on Wednesday.

In the Chow Kit sub-district of Kuala Lumpur - one of the capital's poorest areas - homeless and poor people received food from a student volunteer group of KDU University College.

The food distribution campaign is supported by NGOs Institut Onn Ja'afar and Yayasan Chow Kit, who prepared, together with the students, almost 400 food packages to be allocated across the city.

The event began at midnight and continued until 2 am, an epa journalist reports.

The items given out included cakes, donuts, bread and drinks, as well as blankets.

Around 40 children were among those receiving the food giveaways.

Many families rent small rooms here and some share them with other families.

The campaign aims to reduce the burdens faced by the homeless and the poor who, as Muslims, are taking part in Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and Islam's annual fasting period that requires daily abstention from eating, drinking and sexual acts from sunrise to sunset for one month.

The pre-dawn meal is called Sahur, and is the meal consumed before the fast begins at sunrise, which lasts until sunset and began on May 26.
