Thousands of Poles pray in massive rosary on their country's borders

Berlin, Oct 7 (efe-epa).- Thousands of people took part Saturday in a massive saying of the rosary along the 3,500 kilometers (2,175 miles) of Poland's borders to pray for their country on the 446th anniversary of the battle of Lepanto, Polish media reported.

The organizers of "Rosary on the Borders," including Polish movie producer and director Maciel Bodasinski and the Polish Catholic Church, recalled in a statement that the victory of Europe's Holy League in 1571 against the Ottoman Empire "saved Europe from Islamization."

The promoters, who expected to attract up to 1 million people to the celebration, said on the event's Web page that "the rosary is a powerful weapon for fighting any evil" and noted that "thousands of testimonials and documented miracles demonstrate its extraordinary effectiveness."

A total of 319 churches near the Polish border were chosen, though the celebration had its echo in Catholic churches around the country and elsewhere, including in 10 airports.

"Families can pray at home, the ill in their hospitals, the faithful in their churches," Polish bishops had said in a joint statement.
