Pope Francis returns to Rome after concluding Bangladesh visit

Dhaka, Dec 2 (efe-epa).- Pope Francis returned to Rome from Bangladesh on Saturday after concluding his tour of Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Biman plane carrying the Pope took off at 5.10 pm local time (1110 GMT) from Dhaka international airport and it is expected to arrive in Rome at 11 pm local time (2200 GMT).

The tour started on Monday in Myanmar, and his visit to the two countries were mostly centered around the Rohingya crisis.

The Pope's visit to Bangladesh, which began on Thursday, focused on the Rohingya crisis.

Since Aug. 25, more than 620,000 members of the Muslim minority community have feld to Bangladesh to escape persecution in Myanmar.

On Thursday, in the presence of Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid, the pontiff urged for help from the international community regarding the refugee crisis.

Throughout the tour, the Pope refrained from using the word "Rohingya", on the advice of the local church in Myanmar, as it could lead to violent reactions from extremist groups.

He eventually said the word Rohingya on Friday in Bangladesh after meeting 16 refugees from the ethnic community.
