German palace sees century plant blossom for 1st time in 180 years

Berlin, Aug 9 (efe-epa).- The Charlottenburg palace plant nursery in Berlin witnessed a historic sight as an agave americana, known as the century plant, blossomed there for the first time in almost 200 years, as witnessed Thursday by an epa-efe correspondent on the ground.

The last time a so-called century plant bloomed there was in 1838 and the plant counted 4,820 single blossoms.

But this specimen showed 8,897 single blossoms, which experts believed could be a side effect of the late heat wave that has been hitting Europe this summer.

Despite its name, the century plant usually lives only a few decades and blooms only once right at the end of its life.
