Revelers take to the streets for Kosovo's second-ever LGBT Pride Parade

Pristina (Kosovo), Oct 10 (EFE)- Hundreds of revelers took to the streets of Kosovo's capital on Wednesday to celebrate the country's second-ever Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Parade, as documented by an epa-efe photographer on the ground.

Activists celebrated Kosovo's LGBT community in Pristina, the country's capital and largest city, under a slogan calling for more tolerance in Kosovan society.

"Best wishes from Yerevan to people celebrating love and human rights in Pristina today for Pristina Pride," Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi posted on his Twitter account while on a state visit to Armenia.

"Last year I attended the event that highlights the equality for all in our republic," added Thaçi, who had been at the debut pride parade along with the United States ambassador but was unable to attend this year's edition.

"Proud to march with the members and allies of the LGBT community as they help Kosovo move forward toward a future where all people are treated with dignity and respect," said Colleen Hyland, the chargé d’affaires at the United States embassy, who also marched in support of the Kosovan LGBT community.

Kosovo is the second-youngest country in the world and is a state that is recognized by 113 members of the United Nations, although its sovereignty remains disputed with Serbia, from which it unilaterally declared independence in 2008.

The aftermath of the deadly 1998-99 armed conflict between the rebel group known as the Kosovo Liberation Army and the forces of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia continues to strain daily co-existence between the majority population of ethnic Albanians (who are mostly Muslim) and the Serb minority (who adhere to a regional variant of Orthodox Christianity) in the landlocked territory.
