Spanish authorities rescue 120 migrants in multiple operations

Murcia, (Spain) Dec 5 (efe-epa).- A total of 120 migrants were on Wednesday brought to a port in southern Spain after being rescued in various Spanish Navy, Civil Guard and Maritime Safety Agency operations, according to a government spokesperson.

The migrants arrived on board Maritime Safety Agency rescue ship Clara Campoamor at the port in Cartagena after being rescued at sea by various security and first response units.

According to a government spokesperson, 65 migrants were rescued by the Maritime Rescue Ship Mimosa, 37 by the Civil Guard's Río Cervera patrol boat and the remaining 26 by Spanish Navy patrol boat Toralla.

A total of 128 people, among them 11 women and five minors, were rescued during the operations, though eight migrants disembarked on Tuesday night from the Mimosa.

A Spanish Red Cross spokesperson told EFE the rescued migrants would be given medical assistance by volunteers from the Immediate Emergency Response Teams upon their arrival.

On Tuesday night 12 migrants were rescued some 13 miles off Cape Palos after they were found floating in the water, bruised and showing signs of hypothermia.

Although the rescue ship arrived in port late Tuesday night, the rescue services decided to disembark the migrants from the Clara Campoamor at dawn, once they had coordinated with Red Cross first responders and volunteers providing field medical assistance.
