Kami Rita Sherpa breaks own world record, climbs Mt Everest for 23rd time

Kathmandu, May 15 (efe-epa).- Nepal’s high-altitude climbing guide Kami Rita Sherpa broke his own world record on Wednesday morning by reaching the summit of Mt Everest for the 23rd time.

Mingma Sherpa, chairman of Seven Summit Treks, the expedition agency handling 49-year-old Kami Rita’s expedition, told EFE that Kami Rita reached the world’s highest peak via the south side at 7.50am, making mountaineering history.

“Kami Rita has climbed the tallest peak on Earth more times than any other person and it’s a proud moment for all the mountaineering community,” Mingma Sherpa, also a record holder who has climbed 14 of the world’s peaks above 8,000 meters, told EFE.

Hailing from Thame village in Solukhumbu district, Kami Rita succeeded in breaking the record of 21 Everest ascents set by Apa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa in 2017, both of whom have announced their retirement. Phurba Tashi gave up his plan to climb again in consideration with his family due to the extreme dangers.

On May 16 last year, Kami Rita made history by summiting Everest for the 22nd time.

Kami Rita made his first ascent of the giant peak in 1994 when he was 24 years old. One of his 23 climbs was made from the Chinese side in 2016. He plans to reach the summit at least 25 times.

“I have a goal to climb Everest for 25th time - or maybe more than that,” he told the EFE in April before leaving for his expedition.

The 2019 Everest climbing season officially began on Tuesday with eight Nepali climbing guides making it to the peak. These highly-skilled mountaineers prepare the route to the top of the 8,848m mountain for other climbers.

This season, nearly 1,000 people, including 378 paying climbers, will attempt the summit.
