LGBT community marches in Italy for greater tolerance, denounces Salvini

Rome, June 8 (efe-epa).- Hundreds of members of the LGBT community took part in Rome’s pride parade on Saturday to demand greater tolerance.

The celebrations, held in a country that does not recognize same-sex marriage, only civil unions, began around 3 pm local time, with hundreds of people in attendance.

Participants bore rainbow flags and banners calling for equal rights for all.

Many chanted anti-government slogans, particularly against the leader of the right-wing Northern League party, Matteo Salvini.

The president of the "Famiglie Arcobaleno" ("Rainbow Families") association, Gianfranco Goretti, denounced “the attack” on LGBT people by the government and said there was “obviously the will to set them aside.”

Salvini, who is both the minister of the interior and the deputy prime minister, has said on multiple occasions that families are only formed by a father and a mother, not by same-sex couples.

It was not the first time that LGBT groups have rejected such notions, however.

Two young women recently asked for a photograph with Salvini at a political event in Sicily, and as the politician posed with the pair they turned their heads and kissed, their action garnering widespread media attention.

The Mediterranean country does not recognize same-sex marriage, nor adoption.

In 2016, the Parliament approved civil unions for same-sex couples, a move that had been promoted by former premier Matteo Renzi.
