3D printing exhibition opens in Argentina

Buenos Aires, Jul 6 (efe-epa).- Jewelry, tools, prosthetics and the bust of Nefertiti are some of the various 3D-printed objects being exhibited in Buenos Aires to show the ample possibilities that this new technology allows, which could pave the way to a new industrial revolution.

Carmen Baselga, the curator of the exhibition "3D, printing the world," which opens Friday, told EFE that it is important "to lose fear and start trusting" this new technology that has expanded in North America, Europe and Asia, although it is still uncommon in South America.

At the beginning of the exhibition, funded by Fundacion Telefonica, a bright-blue installation shows how 3D printing is done from scratch.

At one end of the installation, a screen shows a 3D-printed human head, which is connected to hundreds of blue strings that represent the 3D-printing process.

"The installation explains the essence of 3D printing. We can often become scared when new technologies appear that can radically change things," Baselga said.

Baselga, an architect from Valencia, Spain, said that many exhibitions use 3D-printed objects, although this one is among the first exhibitions to directly address the issue of 3D printing and explain how the technology works.

This is why the second room of the exhibition is devoted to explaining the 10 principles of 3D printing, which includes the principle of sustainability, as this new technology helps avoid producing as much waste as traditional manufacturing processes.

"With this new compact and portable manufacturing process, factories will scale down," Baselga said.

If this were to happen, a "paradigm shift" would take place that could lead to "a return to artisanal production, a digital artisanal production," she said.

Visitors finally enter the gallery where a diversity of 3D-printed are displayed, including necklaces designed by a South African artist, an exact reproduction of the bust of Nefertiti from the Berlin Neues Museum, and detailed animal sculptures.
