Bee enthusiast causes a buzz in Vietnam

Nua Ngam, Vietnam, Jun 1 (efe-epa).- Vietnamese farmer Bui Duy Nhat is obsessed with bees.

Since 1993, he has spent most of his free time learning about the flying insects, searching for their honey and attempting to interact with them.

Now Nhat, 41, is known as one of just a handful of people in the Southeast Asian country who can perform "bee bearding" - an exercise that involves encouraging thousands of bees to cover your face and body.

Last week, Nhat showed off his unusual skill in a forested area in Vietnam's northwestern province of Dien Bien.

After capturing a wild queen bee and keeping her on his body, scores of other bees from the hive followed, soon covering his face and torso.

Nhat told epa it typically takes around 20 minutes to attract the wild bees, and he is able to talk and move even with them crawling over his body.

He doesn't wear any protective gear for the "bee bearding", apart from covering his ears, but admitted that he has been stung numerous times.

The performance in Dien Bien's Nua Ngam commune caused a stir among locals, who were eager to take photographs of the spectacle.

But Nhat, who pursues beekeeping as a hobby, stressed that he never tries to make money from his interactions, instead doing it purely because of his obsession with the insect.

"I'm addicted to being with the bees, I can skip eating and sleeping for days to find a way to get honey safely," he told epa.
