Los Angeles shines Bat-Signal to honor TV Batman Adam West

Los Angeles, USA, Jun 15 (efe-epa).- Los Angeles honored the memory of actor Adam West, best known for playing Batman on television, by shining the iconic Bat-Signal into the night sky on Thursday.

West died on June 9 in Los Angeles at the age of 88 after a short battle with leukemia.

"There will never be another Batman like Adam West and there will never be another Adam West," LA mayor Eric Garcetti said on the steps of the Los Angeles City Council, after switching on the Bat-Signal.

The city's police chief Charlie Beck, who flipped the switch along with Garcetti, said it was a dream come true for him to shine the Bat-Signal, which originated in the comic strips as a way to summon Batman to save the day.

Burt Ward, who played Batman's sidekick Robin in the 1960s TV series, thanked the hundreds of fans who had gathered outside the city hall to pay tribute to their idol, and said West was present at the event in spirit.

West had struggled with being typecast after his success as the television Batman, and had a hard time finding consistent work after the show ended.

However, he persisted and found further fame as the voice of the mayor of Quahog, also named Adam West, in the long-running Fox adult animated sitcom "Family Guy."
