Auction house in Switzerland offers diamond described as the most beautiful

Geneva, Oct 11 (EFE).- A flawless diamond hailed as being among the world's largest and most beautiful, and certainly the biggest ever to come up for auction, is to be sold to the highest bidder in Geneva, Switzerland, Christie's auction house said Wednesday.

The D-colour, Type IIA diamond _ a variety highly valued for its transparency and color _ is now suspended from a detachable, asymmetrical, necklace featuring 18 emerald-cut diamonds on one side and emeralds on the other.

"On 4 February 2016, a 404.20-carat rough diamond was mined in eastern Angola," a statement said. "It would turn out to be the 27th-largest rough white diamond ever discovered, and the largest ever found in Angola," Christie's added.

The diamond is to become a prime object of desire at Geneva's Magnificent Jewels sale on Nov. 14.

"Over our 251-year history, Christie’s has had the privilege of handling the world’s rarest and most historic diamonds, but this sensational gem belongs to a class of its own," Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Christie’s Jewellery department, said.

According to Kadakia, a lot of credit goes to the Geneva headquarters of the "de Grisogno" jewelry workshop and its founder, Fawaz Gruosi, whose team of five master craftsmen and women created over 50 wearable designs before the final task of transforming the massive cut-and-polished gem into a wearable piece of jewelry.

In Gruosi's words, back in Dec 2016, he simultaneously faced "the most beautiful diamond in the world," and quite a big headache.

From Africa, it went to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in New York who vouched the diamond's flawless pedigree stating that, "The extreme rarity of a diamond of this quality cannot be overstated."

From the GIA the stone traveled a short distance to the Julius Klein Group where a team of 10 specialists transformed, during Summer of 2016, the 404.20-carat diamond _ the largest they had ever worked with _ into 163.41 carats of cut-and-polished perfection, and from there the gem traveled to Gruosi and his design team in Geneva.

The necklace's reserve bidding price has not been announced yet.

It is currently on an exhibition world tour visiting Hong Kong, London, Dubai and New York before being auctioned in Geneva to meet its very affluent future owner.
