Residente confronts gender stereotypes in new single

Miami, Apr 13 (efe-epa).- Puerto Rican singer Residente released "Sexo" on Friday, a new single that confronts gender stereotypes, dedicated to Sigmund Freud and feminist academic Judith Butler.

In the music video, a man puts on a dress, a young woman writes a poem in a blue bedroom and a young man combs his hair in a pink bedroom, "because they want sex," the song says.

"That is Sigmund Freud's idea. You bought a car because you want sex. In his discourse, many things revolve around sex," Residente said during an interview here with EFE.

The Puerto Rican rapper, whose real name is Rene Perez Joglar, explained that "Sexo" attempts to encapsulate Butler's ideas challenging conventional notions of male and female gender roles.

"Assuming gender roles is something that is taught. Since we are babies we are taught that boys play with toy cars and girls with dolls, but perhaps boys also like to play with dolls," the former singer and lyricist for rap group Calle 13 said.

American DJ and record producer Dillon Francis, who has worked with artists such as Calvin Harris, Diplo, Major Lazer and Skrillex, helped produce "Sexo."

In March 2017, after two years of "intense" work, Residente released his debut solo album, marked by sharp criticisms of social injustice, which won a Grammy for Best Latin Urban Music Album, as well as two Latin Grammys.

"I became very perfectionist while making my last album, going so far as to travel to Africa to find the right sound, but now I am resolving things in a studio like other artists," Perez said.

"I am trying to relax," although "only this year," he added.

The chorus in "Sexo" is sung by Residente's sister Ile (Ileana Cabra), the female voice in Calle 13, which broke up in 2015 after collecting 22 Latin Grammys.
